Cobb Hits for the Cycle
in a 12–4 Rout

Ty Cobb does not collect hits so much as he accumulates them. On Tuesday night at Great American Ball Park, he accumulated them in every denomination the scoreboard recognizes. A triple in the first. A home run in the third. A double in the fourth. A single in the ninth. Four at-bats. Four different kinds of hit. The cycle.

The Hitty Plan won 12–4. Sixteen hits. Three home runs from three different bats. An 80-minute rain delay in the sixth. Ned Garver left with an injury after two and a third. None of that is why this page exists. This page exists because Cobb went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI and did not leave a hit type on the table.

6 AB, 3 R, 4 H, 4 RBI. Triple. Home run. Double. Single. The cycle, in that order, across nine innings.

It started with the rarest piece. Cobb lined a triple to right-center to open the game, and Hank Greenberg plated him with a single between first and second. Babe Ruth bounced into a double play. Edgar Martinez flied to center. One run, and the cycle clock was already running.

The third inning turned the game into a track meet. Pete Mackanin reached on an error by George Sisler, and Cobb deposited the next pitch over the left-field wall — home run number nine on the year, two runs, and the second leg of the cycle locked in. Ruth singled. Martinez singled. Garver left the game with an injury. Mark Davis came on, and Tommie Agee greeted him with a three-run shot down the left-field line. Five runs. The Hitty Plan led 6–1.

Cobb was not finished. Mackanin reached again in the fourth — this time on an error by the pitcher — and Cobb ripped a double down the right-field line to score him. Greenberg followed with a two-run homer. Three legs. Only the single remained.

He did not get it in the sixth. He grounded out to second. He did not get it in the eighth. He grounded out to first. The ninth arrived with The Hitty Plan already up 9–4 and the night threatening to end without the last piece. Martinez walked. Agee doubled. Pinky Higgins singled home two. John Knight singled. Wil Nieves singled. Bases loaded, one out, Mackanin popped to third. Then Cobb — needing only a single to complete the rarest offensive feat in the book — lined one to center. Pinky Higgins scored. Knight was thrown out at the plate. The cycle was complete.

Johnny Humphries got the win despite allowing four runs in six innings. Bill Zuber and Rob Gardner closed it out. Liver Mush Smoothies scratched across runs on a Del Ennis double, a Heinie Zimmerman homer, and a Willie Davis two-run shot, but they never led after the first pitch of the night.

Cobb hit .344 after the game. He had already done everything else. On July 21, he did the one thing left.
